Message An acquaintance of mine has a pretty trick ignition kill switch system installed in their car, that I'd like to "copy".

I've seen the simple fuel cutoff switch, which is fine and all, but I don't want to have to deal with digging around and flipping a toggle switch every time I leave the car someplace.

I'm no electrical engineer, but I'm handy with a multimeter and soldering iron. I'll describe the system the way I envision it working, and I hope someone can help fill in the gaps.

I have searched around Google and other car forums, but haven't quite found what I'm looking for.

1) I don't want the car to start until I activate a switch. I envision this as a contact/pressure plate switch (not an on/off switch). When pressed, it will send a signal to the ignition to allow starting of the car.

2) A secondary switch would be wired allowing me to bypass the system entirely - a valet switch, if you will.

I'm fairly certain that the contact switch will simply signal a relay which will supply power to the ignition, but with a pressure/contact type switch, how will the power be maintained after the switch is released?

Whoever installed this system in my friends car did a hell of a job, since it's deep inside the dash. I was hoping to inspect and reverse engineer it, but that didn't fare so well - and I wasn't about to rip his entire dash out ;-)

When making contact on the switch, I could definitely hear a relay being triggered. After a couple of seconds (and not starting the car) I could here it "click" again, reverting to the "armed" state.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions/other write-ups that I could look up? Much appreciated.
